Time to start winning - McCartney

With only one win in seven games this season, coach Brendan McCartney has warned the Western Bulldogs they need to step up a gear right away.

The club has been in dismal form for a while - their win against Brisbane is their only success in 18 games - but McCartney accepts that the excuses have to stop. And there is genuine belief in the team that they can beat Gold Coast this weekend, the coach says.

Despite showing flashes of brilliance, they have not been able to convert it into a concerted effort over an entire game. McCartney believes the time is ripe to get a move on and carve out a few wins to change things around.

There is never any excuse really and I don't think we make excuses here. It (playing Gold Coast) is a great opportunity for us.

He said: "There is never any excuse really and I don't think we make excuses here. It (playing Gold Coast) is a great opportunity for us."

The coach attributed their performances so far to a combination of a tough draw and a few injuries to talented players.

McCartney added: "What we can control is how we play so we are really looking forward to the opportunity to play the way we did last week and have at times this year for longer."

Despite Gold Coast’s impressive and easy win over Melbourne last time out, McCartney believes his side has enough ability to come out on top.

He said, "We know we're playing a talented young team and we are going to have to play well to get the result."

McCartney revealed Brett Goodes will return to the squad after completing a suspension while Nick Lower could also make it to the team.

Western Bulldogs are 5/4 to beat Gold Coast, who are 13/20.  The Suns are 93/100 conceding a 10.5-points start.
