Martinez joy at Maloney deal
Roberto Martinez expressed his delight after 'key' man Shaun Maloney signed a new two-and-a-half-year contract to stay at Wigan until summer 2015.
The Latics boss stressed the importance of the Scotland international midfielder to the club's cause given that he played a key role in helping them survive in the Premier League last season.
Maloney has gone on to make 20 starts this term and scored two goals, against Stoke City and Norwich City, as Wigan currently sit just outside the relegation places on goal difference following a run of just one win in their last nine outings.
It appears that there will be another scrap for survival at the DW Stadium in the second half of the season and Martinez feels players like Maloney will make the difference in helping them avoid the drop once again.

He told the club's website: "We’re delighted that Shaun has committed his future to the club. From the first day he arrived his professionalism and determination to succeed has been outstanding and an example for the younger members of the group to follow.
"Shaun is one of the most technically gifted British players that you will find, but on top of his style and footballing flair his work-rate and purpose in his performances make him a key member of our future at Wigan Athletic.
"I’m sure the fans are looking forward to watching him continue to enjoy his football at Latics for a long time."
Wigan are 14/1 not to be relegated this season, while those who feel their time is up in the top flight can back them at 1/33 to drop down into the Championship.
