Laura Robson ensured that two British women will play in the third round of the Australian Open after knocking out the former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova.

It was a brilliant display by the British number two who lost the first set before hitting back to beat the number eight seed from the Czech Republic 2-6 6-3 11-9.

Robson joins Heather Watson in the third round in Melbourne. Watson faces the world number four Agnieszka Radwanska in the last 32 while Robson will play the 29th seed from America Sloane Stephens.

Kvitova, who has been in poor form of late, fired down 18 double faults and 18 aces in an extremely inconsistent display but Robson enhanced her burgeoning reputation with a scintillating performance. She knocked two other former Grand Slam winners - Li Na and Kim Clijsters - out of last year's US Open.

I was trying to make everything happen, and that's what I'm happy about.

Victoria Azarenka

Elsewhere, defending champion Victoria Azarenka and five-time winner Serena Williams both recorded easy second-round victories.

Azarenka thrashed Eleni Daniilidou 6-1 6-0 in just 55 minutes and will next play the American Jamie Hampton, who easily beat the Thai qualifier Luksika Kumkhum.

"I definitely stepped it up from my first match, and I was in the zone trying to execute all of my shots," said the Belarusian afterwards. "I was trying to make everything happen, and that's what I'm happy about."

Meanwhile, the third seeded Williams saw off Garbine Muguruza of Spain 6-2 6-0. The American had suffered an ankle injury in the first round but showed no signs of discomfort during a routine victory.

Williams next plays Japan's Ayumi Morita. Azarenka is 11/10 to win the Australian Open title while Williams can be backed at 1212/1 to clinch her 16th Grand Slam title.
