Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere can return to top form according to manager Arsene Wenger, who is set to call on the England international against Koln.

The 25-year-old has not featured for the Gunners in well over a year, spending last season out on loan at Bournemouth after a host of injury problems halted his progress at the Emirates Stadium, with that spell with the Cherries cut short by a broken leg.

He enjoys being back and competing for his place and what I see in training is positive.

However, Wilshere is now challenging for a first-team return with the Londoners and is showing up well according to Wenger, who has been impressed by the desire and professionalism of his player.

He told reporters: "He needs a little burst (of speed) to get away from people, because he can turn the game forward and, if you can turn the game forward, you need your legs to get you out of pressure.

"That will come back, it is coming back in training as well. He is very hungry and sharp.

"As well, he is not completely at his best, but he is getting there every week. He enjoys being back and competing for his place and what I see in training is positive."

Wenger also confirmed that he will rest a number of regular starters for the Europa League home game on Thursday evening, with Petr Cech, Laurent Koscielny, Aaron Ramsey, Mesut Ozil, Granit Xhaka, Danny Welbeck and Alexandre Lacazette all omitted from the matchday squad.

However, striker Alexis Sanchez is included, having featured as a late substitute in the 3-0 Premier League win at home to Bournemouth last weekend.

He can be backed at 8/11 to score at any time against Bundesliga outfit Koln and is 3/1 to net the first goal of the game, with Arsenal 2/5 to claim a 2-0 victory on the night.
