North Queensland made it five wins in six games as they beat the Rabbitohs 23-10 in Cairns.

The Cowboys continue to suggest they will be in the shake-up for the premiership this year, despite losing stars Johnathan Thurston and Matt Scott to season-ending injuries.

It was the first time they have managed three consecutive wins without playmaker Thurston.

They ran in three tries in the first half at Barlow Park but then suffered a second-half breakdown in discipline and ball-handling, with their completion rate dropping from 85 per cent to 76 per cent.

North Queensland will also have their fingers crossed that they won't be adding new names to their injury list. Antonio Winterstein was forced off with a calf problem, while Scott Bolton and John Asiata both had scares but returned to the field.

The Rabbitohs scored first, after a penalty from the Cowboys gave them the attacking field position. Adam Reynolds created some space on his inside and the halfback sent Cody Walker through to dive over between the posts.

The Cowboys hit back straight away as Jake Granville's short ball gave Jason Taumalolo the chance to crash over.

They then took the lead when a cut-out ball from Lachlan Coote found Kyle Feldt unmarked for his team's second try.

Granville claimed another try assist when he fed a short ball to Coen Hess who crashed over to make three unanswered tries for the Cowboys leading into the interval.

North Queensland stretched their lead to 16 points early in the second half when hooker Granville made use of the field position, catching Reynolds out of position to scoot through a gaping hole for a try to go with his two assists.

The Rabbitohs replied 12 minutes from the end when a strong set resulted in Braidon Burns crossing out wide when the Cowboys' defensive line was caught out by a fast pass from Robert Jennings.

North Queensland areĀ 2/7 to win their next game against the Warriors, who are 57/20.
