Smith backs Villa to beat the drop
Aston Villa manager Dean Smith has backed his side to pull off "mission impossible" by keeping themselves in the Premier League this season.
Villa remain in the bottom three, starting the weekend one point from safety after a poor run of results.
Smith's men are without a win in eight league matches, but they still have a mathematical chance of avoiding the drop, with Watford and West Ham within touching distance.
I've still not been relegated as a manager, and I don't expect to be this season,Dean Smith
Villa were beaten 1-0 by Wolves last time out and their remaining fixtures include a trip to Anfield on Sunday to face Liverpool, while they also need to face Manchester United, Everton, Arsenal and West Ham before the campaign comes to a close.
Liverpool will be determined to make a statement after their 4-0 defeat to Manchester City on Thursday, but Smith says his team have what it takes to get themselves out of trouble.
"Unfortunately we haven't got Tom Cruise with us, but I've got 11 players, and I've seen a desire in their eyes," he said.
"They feel stung by criticism; you are going to get criticism when you're in a position we're in. Their job is to prove people wrong.
"I've still not been relegated as a manager, and I don't expect to be this season either."
Villa are 13.00 to take three points at Anfield on Sunday afternoon, with the Reds 1.18 and the draw 7.50.
