Gold Cup glory arrives for Mullins
Trainer Willie Mullins was delighted to have finally ended his wait for Gold Cup glory as Al Boum Photo romped home by two and a half lengths at Cheltenham.
Mullins, who has trained more winners at the Cheltenham Festival than anyone else, had previously been unable to add Gold Cup success to his career-laden CV.
I didn't think I would have a good Cheltenham with how the winter had gone, but here we are.Willie Mullins
However, Al Boum Photo delivered in style, with Anibale Fly taking second place and Bristol De Mai third, while 2018 winner Native River trailed home in fourth.
Mullins' other three runners - Kemboy, Bellshill and Invitation Only - were all out of the race before the first circuit had been completed, but Al Boum Photo more than made up for that with an outstanding display.
He told ITV Sport: "It feels great, I'm delighted for connections.
"It's good to get the Gold Cup finally, three of my other four runners were out before the first circuit finished, but Al Boum Photo looked so relaxed and I knew he could jump.
"I come here every year and start afresh. I didn't think I would have a good Cheltenham with how the winter had gone, but here we are.
"We weren't the fancied one, but he jumped the last two well and (jockey) Paul Townend looked so relaxed. Bar something extraordinary, we had it in the bag from two-out."
Meanwhile, Anibale Fly is now 11.00 to win the Grand National later this year, with Bristol De Mai priced at 1000.00 and Mullins charge Total Recall 1000.00.
