Tilsit set for Goodwood return
A return to Goodwood this month for the Celebration Mile beckons for Tilsit after his Group 3 success in the Bonhams Thoroughbred Stakes at the Glorious meeting.
The Charlie Hills-trained three-year-old, owned by Khalid Abdullah, produced a career-best performance to defeat My Oberon by a length and a half under Ryan Moore.
The Thoroughbred Stakes has a fine recent honour roll with Duke Of Hazzard, Regal Reality and Beat The Bank among previous winners.
It was a first Group-race success for Tilsit and another step up in company awaits with Hills eyeing the Group 2 Celebration Mile on August 29.
Hills said: "Tilsit is still quite green and immature, but this race should have done him a world of good. There's the option of coming back here for the Celebration Mile and we've always thought a lot of him - over the winter we kept calling him a Derby horse.
"That never happened and Covid didn't help, but I think he'd get further than a mile."
Tilsit's first two starts came on the Tapeta at Newcastle, finishing a head second to Al Salt on debut before running out an emphatic 19-length winner of a mile novice last month. The son of First Defence could stay further down the line but looks firmly progressive for his high-profile connections.
Hills would be seeking a first winner in the Celebration Mile, a race his father Barry landed three times with Prince Rupert (1988), Distant Relative (1989) and Bold Russian (1991). Last year's winner Duke Of Hazzard completed the Thoroughbred Stakes-Celebration Mile double.
