Marshall linked to Bulldogs
Benji Marshall is reported to be on the wanted list of the Canterbury Bulldogs if they fail to land Matt Burton from the Panthers.
Veteran Marshall is currently without a club for the 2021 NRL campaign after being released by Wests Tigers at the end of last season, and is open to offers.
The Sharks have been heavily linked with a swoop for the five-eighth as they look to bring in a replacement for Shaun Johnson.
Johnson has picked up a serious Achilles injury that will keep him out for most of next season and Marshall has been touted as someone who could fill the role.
However, it appears to be paper talk rather than concrete interest from Cronulla, who say they have not held talks over a move for the player.
Reports now claim that the re-signing of young starlet Braydon Trindall will mean there is no place for Marshall in the Sharks ranks as they also have Chad Townsend on the roster.
As one door closes another may open for Marshall, with the Bulldogs now said to be in the hunt, should their pursuit of Burton not work out.
As things stand, Burton could join on a two-year deal from 2022, but there is a chance he could be released early from his Panthers contract and sign in time for next season.
If that does not happen, or if the deal falls through, then Marshall is seen as the perfect player to step in for a season while the Bulldogs weigh up their options.
The Bulldogs are priced at 51.00 to win the NRL grand final.
