Newcastle Falcons director of rugby Dean Richards believes his side are making strides forward despite their defeat in the European Challenge Cup semi-final.

The Falcons have been one of the surprise packages in the Aviva Premiership this season but failed to reach their European goal after a 33-12 defeat at Gloucester on Saturday.

Despite their setback against the Cherry & Whites, Richards still feels like his side are progressing well as they now focus on their play-off goal.

He told BBC Radio Newcastle: "If you're playing against a side like Gloucester you've got to take your chances, and we didn't take our chances.

"We've lost two semi-finals - one in the Anglo-Welsh Cup and obviously this one - and all it means is we'll look to the next game, and Leicester is the next game.

"We're going in the right direction - the objective every year is to improve on where we were the year before and we seem to be doing that at the moment."

Newcastle are 17.00 to win the Aviva Premiership title this season.
