The Chicago Cubs moved percentage points ahead of the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Central Division with an extra inning victory over the Padres at Petco Park in Chicago.
One in the ninth to tie proceedings and one more in the 10th was ultimately enough the Chicago to edge their hosts 5-4.
Pedro Strop (4-1) picked up the win in relief after Tyler Chatwood had gone the first five innings for the Cubs.
The 28-year old right-hander allowed three runs on five hits and three walks while striking out two over five innings before leaving without the decision.
Chicago has won seven of their past 10 and with the Brewers treading water, that has been enough to push the Cubs into first place in the Division.
Kyle Hendricks gets the call on Saturday against the Padres with Jon Lester scheduled for Sunday's finale before the All-Star break.
The Cubs are 1.25 for the National League Central and 5000.00 for the League outright.
Meanwhile, Milwaukee will look to bounce back after losing their third straight.
For the second consecutive day the Pirates held the Brewers to three runs at PNC Park and once again Pittsburgh was able to get the better of the visitors.
Nick Kingham (4-4) struck out nine over 6 1-3 innings on his way to a victory in the 7-3 triumph.
There's a double header on Saturday with Ivan Nova facing off with Chase Anderson in the early game and Clay Holmes and Brent Suter getting the call in the matinee.
That will leave Joe Musgrove and Jhoulys Chacin to contest Sunday's finale.
