Chargers on the outside looking in
The Los Angeles Chargers must win their game on Sunday against the Oakland Raiders and then hope for some help if they are to make the postseason this year.
The various tiebreakers involved mean that the Chargers need the victory, must have the Tennessee Titans lose to the Jacksonville Jaguars and not end up in a three-way tie with the Baltimore Ravens and the Buffalo Bills.
The latter seems the most unlikely with the Ravens hosting the struggling Cincinnati Bengals and the Bills playing the Miami Dolphins.
LA, who are 1213.00 for the Super Bowl, come into the game at the StubHub Center in Carson after defeating the New York Jets 14-7 last week at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ.
Quarterback Philip Rivers completed 22-of-40 for 290 yards and one touchdown on the day with running back Melvin Gordon rumbling for 81 yards and a score on 19 carries.
Rivers is coming to the end of the line at the age of 36 and it would not be a surprise to see the Chargers look to draft an heir apparent in the 2018 NFL Draft.
Baker Mayfield of the Oklahoma Sooners could well be available when LA drafts and would be an interesting selection.
There's no need for a new quarterback in Oakland with Derek Carr signed long term, but the former Fresno State star has regressed this season.
Big changes would seem to be coming this offseason and everybody, including head coach Jack Del Rio, appears to be in the firing line.
