Manning benching stuns NFL

The big story in the NFC East on Tuesday was the benching of Eli Manning by the New York Giants.

The Philadelphia Eagles have the best record in the NFL, the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins meet this week, but Manning's benching took centre stage.

The Giants came into the season with expectations that they would challenge for the Division crown and make some noise in the playoffs.

Instead, in what has been a train wreck of a season, New York has struggled all year and their 2-9 record is in many ways overly generous.

Bad coaching and a failure to address the needs on the offensive line have turned a team that was projected to win as many as ten games into a punching bag that has a point differential of -95.

Only the San Francisco 49ers are worse in the NFC and the Niners lone victory so far this season was over the Giants.

This week New York travels to Oakland to take on the Raiders at the Coliseum. Geno Smith will get the start for the visitors with former Cal star Davis Webb, a third round pick in the Draft this past April, due to take some significant snaps as well.

With a high draft pick looming in the 2018 NFL Draft and some well-regarded signal callers in the college ranks, the Giants have to see whether they have anything in Webb who transferred to Cal after losing his starting spot to Patrick Mahomes at Texas Tech.

New York returns home to the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey for three of their remaining four games and will host Division rivals the Cowboys, Eagles and Redskins with a road trip to play the Arizona Cardinals between their games against Philadelphia and Washington.

The Eagles meanwhile are 2.37 to win the NFC Championship. The New Orleans Saints are 1213.00 with the Atlanta Falcons at 1213.00.
