Eight cruiserweights get the chance to shine

All-action tournament boxing returns with the big-hitting BOXXER cruiserweight series on Saturday night.

Eight British cruiserweights will meet in Manchester in what promises to be another exciting competition. There's a £40,000 prize pool up for grabs and the winner has the opportunity to star on Sky Sports.

The tournament is made up of four quarter-finals, two semi-finals and a final and all bouts are fought over a 3x3 minute round distance. There are five unbeaten fighters in the line-up and here is everything you need to know about the event.

When is the BOXXER cruiserweight series?

The competition takes place on Saturday 14th May. The first bout is expected to get under way at 19:15pm.

What is the BOXXER cruiserweight series?

The BOXXER series is a one-night competition consisting of eight British cruiserweights. It's a mix of experienced and novice boxers and it follows on from the Prizefighter events that put tournament boxing on the map.

It's a different challenge to conventional fights, as the winner will need to be victorious in three bouts on the same night, and it can often lend itself to an all-action style.

Where is the BOXXER cruiserweight series?

The event will take place at the O2 Victoria Warehouse in Manchester. The site is primarily used as a music venue and is situated just a stone's throw away from Manchester United's Old Trafford ground.

Can I watch the BOXXER cruiserweight series?

Yes, the tournament will be shown live on Sky Sports Action. Coverage gets commences at 19:00 and the first bout is expected to start at 19:15pm.

Who is the favourite and are there any belts on the line?

Jamie Smith has been put in as the 3.25 favourite. However, it's worth noting that the draw can play a major role in the outcome of these events and there is the prospect of major market moves after that takes place on Friday afternoon.

It's a random draw at the quarter-final stage and that stays fixed as the tournament moves into the semi-final and final. There are no belts on the line, but there is major prize money up for grabs and there's a chance to fight again on a major platform like Sky Sports.

Who is fighting in the BOXXER cruiserweight series?

Unbeaten Amersham fighter Smith heads the field. The 30-year-old has only had three professional bouts and it was a late switch of status.

However, Smith was a good amateur and he has been a sparring partner for the likes of Dillian Whyte and Dereck Chisora in the past.

Ellis Zorro is more experienced having had 11 pro bouts and the 29-year-old also has boxed on a televised card before. The Lewisham fighter, 3.75 on the night, has yet to be defeated and six of his wins have come by stoppage.

Sheldon McDonald is another unbeaten performer and the 25-year-old won a national amateur title in 2018. The Sheffield slugger has won his opening three bouts as a pro and is 7.50 to triumph in Manchester .

Ryan Cotterell is the youngest boxer in the tournament at the age of 22. The Walsall whacker has had just one pro contest, but he was on the 2019 England elite squad.

Ricky Reeves is another Sheffield fighter, but the former sprinter only made the switch to boxing in 2018. The 31-year-old has won his two fights to date, the latest of those back in March.

Jay Farrell is the oldest competitor in the line-up at the age of 33. The Liverpool man is coached by Derry Mathews, but he was defeated when challenging for the Central Area title in his latest bout and that came back in 2020.

Jack Fay is a multi-time national amateur champion and the Darwen man has high hopes of making an impact on the pro ranks. However, Fay, 13.00 on the night, had to settle for a draw in his latest bout against Luis Palmer.

Anees Taj completes the field and the Watford man has won five of his six bouts. The latest of those fights was a defeat against Adrian Valentin, but he has been in with a fairly decent level of opposition.
