The Ashes: Carey keeping focused

01 December 2021 16:53:02 GMTPlus10

Alex Carey is staying focused on his own preparations ahead of a potential Ashes Test call-up and says everything else is out of his control.

Australia are priced at 1.005 to win the Ashes series against England and there is a good chance Carey will be in the side for the opening Test at the Gabba.

Tough call

The Australian selectors have a tough decision to make over who will replace former captain Tim Paine as wicketkeeper with Carey and Josh Inglis battling to take the gloves.

Inglis has returned to Perth to see family following the T20 World Cup but is expected to return to Brisbane shortly.

However it is thought Inglis will take the gloves for an Australia A tour game, leaving Carey in pole position to take his place in the Test side.

Experience the key

Carey has vast experience of playing for Australia when making 83 appearances in limited-over cricket, while he has also captained Australia A.

Such factors will weigh heavily in his favour but a decision has yet to be made and Carey is keeping his cool and remaining focused on his training so he is ready if he does get the nod.

"My dream is to play Test cricket and if that opportunity does arise, then I know the guys in that team," Carey told cricket.com.au. "But selection is out of my control.

"I'll just go up to Brisbane and prepare the best I can, those other events will take care of themselves."
