Perez wants to give Mercedes a hard time
Sergio Perez is hopeful that Red Bull will be able to challenge Mercedes in this year's Constructors' Championship now he has teamed up with Max Verstappen.
Perez brings great experience to the team having featured in 191 Grands Prix and he claimed his first success in December when the Mexican triumphed for Racing Point at the Sakhir Grand Prix in Bahrain.
We have to get on top and hopefully the car is good enough for that, but we have to wait and see.Sergio Perez
It looked as if he might be without a drive for the forthcoming season but he has taken over from Alex Albon and cannot wait for the start of the new season, which will begin at the scene of his triumph on 28th March.
Red Bull claimed two victories last season when Verstappen won the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix at Silverstone and also topped the podium at Abu Dhabi.
The team collected 319 points which left them well behind Mercedes' tally of 573, but Perez believes Red Bull can narrow that gap significantly this time.
He said: "I think the goal is to win. There's obviously a process to this. We have to get on top and hopefully the car is good enough for that, but we have to wait and see.
"Mercedes have had a good advantage over the team in the last few years, so hopefully this season we're able to close the gap and give them a hard time.
"Max is a great talent and I can't really wait to start working together with him.
"You can see that he's so natural in his talent and technically he's very strong as well, so we're just looking forward to getting the car up there and to start fighting to get as many points as possible."
