Patterson bullish on Coventina chances
Coventina Bay will attempt to ascend the Queensland throne when she lines up in the Group 1 Tattersall's Tiara at Eagle Farm next week.
After impressing with a trial win at the Sunshine Coast earlier this month, the Robbie Patterson-trained five-year-old finished seventh in the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes at the same venue last Saturday and is rated a 21.00 chance for the 1400-metre contest on 26th June.
Reflecting on her latest run, when she finished three and a quarter lengths behind the winner, Brooklyn Hustle, having not got the clearest of passages under Samantha Collett, Patterson said: "She just got into a position that she couldn't get out of, she got stuck on the fence, and it wasn't the place to be.
"It chopped up on the inside and it was just circumstances that we ended up there. But I was happy with the run and she has pulled up well.
"It's onwards and upwards from here. She has got the feel of the track now with the run under her belt and she will improve, which she will need to. I am really happy with her."
The winner of eight of her 15 starts to date, Coventina Bay will go in search of her first Group 1 victory having finished runner-up in the NZ Thoroughbred Breeders' Stakes over 1600 metres behind Avantage on her only other start at the elite level.
