Baaeed challenge for El Drama

Roger Varian has plenty of belief in El Drama.

El Drama is set for a clash with the imposing Baaeed as he bids for a first Group success in the Bonhams Thoroughbred Stakes at Goodwood on Friday.

The Roger Varian-trained three-year-old failed to shine in Group 1 outing in his last two races and drops down to a mile to line up for the Goodwood Group 3 contest.

The colt is 12.00 to take his first win since landing the Dee Stakes in May, as he attempts to put a stop to Baaeed's (1.40) unbeaten run this season.

We're looking forward to bringing him back to a mile.

Varian ponders El Drama options

Varian said: "El Drama hasn't done a lot wrong in his career and I would put a line through his run in the French Derby as I'm not sure what went wrong there, but he didn't finish his race off.

"He didn't disgrace himself in the Eclipse behind three top-class horses and I think the form of the Dee Stakes earlier in the year is strong.

"We're looking forward to bringing him back to a mile and more rain would not inconvenience him."

Varian wary of conditions

Drying conditions may not play into El Drama's favour, with his two wins coming over good to soft and soft ground, but while he failed to shine against St Mark's Basilica, Baaeed is a much easier target, with the William Haggas-trained runner making his first foray into Group company.

"We'll give a lot of respect to William Haggas' horse at the top of the market," Varian added. "But we'd be very hopeful El Drama will run a good race."

The Newmarket-based trainer will be aiming for this first win in the 1m Group 3 contest after being placed in the previous two runnings of the race.
