Ed Bethell is excited about Fearby's chances in the Molecomb Stakes

Ed Bethell, who sent out his first runners in January, is eyeing a first Group race with Fearby in Wednesday's Molecomb Stakes at the Goodwood Festival.

Fearby is 2.62 to score on the Sussex Downs, with Eve Johnson Houghton's Chipotle, winner of the Windsor Castle Stakes and last seen finishing mid-field in the Super Sprint at Newbury 11 days ago, available at 9.50.

Improving rookie

After finishing fourth at Newcastle in May on his debut, the son of Havana Gold has won both starts since, in a Wetherby maiden and the Listed Dragon Stakes at Sandown, both under PJ McDonald who retains the ride.

We're all excited to be part of a race like this in our first season.

The pair took the latter by five lengths from Mojomaker, who is back among their rivals in the Molecomb.

"We're all excited to be part of a race like this in our first season," Bethell said. "Our main target had been the Gimcrack but he came out of Sandown so well that we thought this became the next natural progression. The Gimcrack would still be within reach if he ran well."

The two-year-old, who will break from stall four in the Molecomb, is the one to beat on both Racing Post Ratings and BHA figures.

Ground could be a worry

Fearby has not run on softer than good to soft, the going at Sandown, and Bethell conceded conditions are on his mind.

He added: "The ground is an unknown. I know he won on good to soft at Sandown, but it was drying then rather than really testing. They say it's going to be soft, which isn't ideal, but is better than running him on heavy. That really is my only concern as he goes there looking a million dollars."
