Goodwin hails Demons after huge win
Demons coach Simon Goodwin says his side are very much a work in progress after they kept their finals hopes alive with a victory over GWS.
Following some poor results, the Demons were badly in need of a result against GWS, and they came up trumps when edging the Giants by just five points.
The result moves Melbourne above GWS and into the top eight with just one game of the home and away season remaining.
That comes against Essendon, where they will need to win and hope other results also go their way for them to make the eight.
However, the fact they are still in the mix comes as a huge boost and Goodwin was full of praise for his players when he addressed the media after the game.
And no matter what happens next week, Goodwin believes the club are heading in the right direction.
"We've spoken about the learnings of the last two games and the importance of what we needed to execute tonight, so it was a step forward as a footy club," Goodwin revealed.
"There's no question about that. I thought some of the maturity of some of our younger guys especially was outstanding.
"But we've got to create a new pathway forward as a club and play this way week in, week out, and all we've done is given ourselves an opportunity to play the same way again next week."
2019 draftee Trent Rivers was the hero when kicking his second goal of the night in the last three minutes of the game to seal the win.
The Demons are priced at 5212/1 to make the grand final.
