Phillips axed by St Kilda
St Kilda have made another change to their list for 2021 after confirming Ed Phillips has not been offered a contract.
Saints, like all AFL clubs, are having to make some tough calls in this off-season and Phillips is one of a number of players to head for the exit door.
Matty Parker, Doulton Langlands, Ryan Abbott, Jack Bell, Jack Mayo and Logan Austin will not be with Saints for the season ahead, while Nathan Brown has retired.
Phillips joined the club in 2016 via the NAB AFL Draft where he was pick No.56, and he had to wait until round eight in 2018 before making his debut against Fremantle.
The 22-year-old then went on to play 15 games, including four in the 2020 campaign, but that will be it as far as his career with St Kilda is concerned.
Head of list management James Gallagher has admitted it was a tough decision to make, but a necessary one, and has backed the wingman to go on and forge a career with another AFL club.
"It was a really hard conversation to have," Gallagher said. "It's been a theme throughout this off-season, but unfortunately due to the situation our industry finds itself in, tough calls must be made.
"Ed has been a pleasure to have at the club for the past few years. He’s extremely hardworking, dedicated and always looking for ways to help those around him.
"I have no doubt he has big things ahead of him and we wish him all the best with whatever comes next."
St Kilda are priced at 18/1 to win the AFL grand final.
