Melbourne Stars may bring in two new overseas recruits next summer, with all-time leading run-scorer Luke Wright said to be unlikely to return.
Foundation player Wright has played more matches than any other Stars player since the competition began in 2011 and is the only batsman to have scored more than 1,000 runs for the team.
But along with Kevin Pietersen, who's second on the Stars' all-time runs list having been with them since 2014, he's understood to be departing at the end of this season.
Pietersen, 37, announced he would not be returning to the Stars as a player in 2018-19 following their fourth straight defeat to start the season against Melbourne Renegades.
I'll continue to come back to Australia. I'd love to be back with the Stars in some capacity, and do stuff with the Stars.Kevin Pietersen
The former England Test star says he won't play beyond the end of this year but does plan on returning to the Stars in some capacity.
Pietersen is committed to playing the upcoming Pakistan Super League as well as a Twenty20 tournament in his native South Africa later this year, but won't play in the next BBL campaign.
"I think you know when the time is right," he told reporters after the derby defeat.
Wright, who turns 33 in March, is highly unlikely to be offered a place on the Stars' list next season.
The opening batsman last season became the first player to notch 50 games with the club and was their player of the season, but he's only made 71 runs in four innings this season.
The Stars have made the finals every season but their winless start to the campaign means their chances of preserving that record are slim.
Speaking of his decision not to play into 2019, Pietersen said: "No one makes a decision for you when it's as a big a decision as this, you make it yourself. It's got nothing to do with anybody else."
He added: "I'll continue to come back to Australia. I'd love to be back with the Stars in some capacity, and do stuff with the Stars."
Melbourne Stars are 1213.00 to win the BBL title. The Stars are 21.00 to reach the final.
