South Africa captain Faf du Plessis could miss the first two Tests against Australia after fracturing a finger.
The 33-year-old has already been ruled out of the remainder of the one-day and Twenty20 series against India because of the injury.
The Proteas also lost AB de Villiers due to a finger injury for the first three matches of the 50-over series against India.
Du Plessis fractured his right index finger during the six-wicket defeat to India in the opening one-day international between the two teams in Durban on Thursday.
It is anticipated that du Plessis, who scored 120 runs in Durban, will be out of action for between three and six weeks.
The first of the four Tests against Australia is scheduled to start on 1st March.
South Africa have added Farhaan Behardien to their limited overs squad as a replacement for du Plessis, while the uncapped Heinrich Klaasen has been called up as a reserve wicketkeeper-batsman.
South Africa are 21.00 to win the one-day series against India and 2.20 to triumph in Sunday's second match between the two teams.
