Canterbury snap up Stokes

Ben Stokes has signed for New Zealand side Canterbury and could make his first start for the team against Otago on Sunday.

The 26-year-old has been made unavailable to play for his country by the England and Wales Cricket Board and was not involved in the first Test defeat to Australia in Brisbane earlier this month.

He will not feature in the second Test against the Baggy Greens in Adelaide and it looks increasingly likely that he will play no part in the Ashes series, which England are 250/1 to win outright.

However, the Durham all-rounder has now signed for Canterbury and may play in their 50-over game against Otago this weekend.

"While Ben awaits the outcome of an investigation underway in the UK, he wants to maintain his fitness and his connection with the game," said Canterbury's director of cricket Gary Stead.

"He is a brilliant all-round player and we are really pleased to have secured one of the world's best for our domestic competition."

Stokes may also feature in Australia's Big Bash T20 tournament, which Adelaide Strikers are 11/4 to win.

The second Ashes Test starts on Saturday and England can be backed at 5/2 to emerge victorious and level the series up at 1-1.
