Sebastian Vettel claims Ferrari have to take the final step to win Formula 1 titles again but that will be 'the hardest' one.
The four-time world drivers champion pushed Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton for the majority of the 2017 campaign, but ultimately fell short in the closing months and had to settle for second spot in the standings, 46 points adrift of the British driver.
Ferrari also finished second behind Mercedes in the contructors championship and, while the champions were 146 points clear at the top, the Maranello-based outfit were 154 points clear of third-placed Red Bull.
What we have to do is take that final step. If you look back it's always that final step that's the hardest.Sebastian vettel
Vettel feels that Ferrari have now put the foundations in place to push on and make a stronger challenge for silverware in 2018, but knows that the final move will be the most difficult.
"Obviously the regulations stay roughly the same. I think we have a good and healthy platform to build on at the beginning of the year so I hope we can continue," Vettel told Autosport.
"What we have to do is take that final step. If you look back it's always that final step that's the hardest.
"There's a lot of work going on already and for the last couple of months focusing on next year, trying to make the car faster, with more power into the power unit, and then we'll see where we are."
Vettel is 51.00 to win the 2018 drivers championship, while Hamilton is priced at 1.002 to defend his crown.
