Price ponders Wise Hero future
Trainer John Price was impressed with Wise Hero's win at Flemington on New Year's Day but believes his lightly-raced galloper still has plenty to prove.
Wise Hero made it five wins from nine starts when winning the Straight Draw Handicap (1400m) but Price still wants to see more.
Wise Hero stepped up to 1400m for the first time but it did not prove to be an issue as he wrapped up a one and a quarter length win over Just Hifalutin, much to the delight of price.
"He's still got a long way to go to prove that he's a good horse but, in hindsight, he's just won at Flemington - so it's a big deal," Price said.
"There was some element of risk there (at 1400m) though, but he's a beautiful natural tempo horse and I had no real concerns with him because I know he can sprint off whatever he does."
Price said Wise Hero's win showed he had the scope to tackle better races than his Benchmark 78 assignment and could develop a capability of seeing out a longer trip.
"Although he's a four-year-old, he's just come of age now and he's still a high chance of being a bit better than what he has shown so far," Price added.
"I think there will come a day where we do get over a mile with him, because he relaxes so well and he can sprint."
