She Will Reign the one to beat
Jockey Ben Melham has fired an ominous warning to She Will Reign's rivals after claiming she has got even better since her Inglis Nursery romp two months ago.
Melham piloted She Will Reign in a nine-length trial win at Warwick Farm last week, when she stopped the clock on 45 seconds flat for the 808m.
She Will Reign is the hot fancy for the Silver Slipper and Melham expects her to justify her strong market support and book her spot in the Golden Slipper at Rosehill on Saturday.
"She felt as though she had definitely improved and everybody saw her trial and she was ultra-impressive," Melham said. "The feel she gave me, she felt stronger to me this time than she did the first time I trialled her (before her first start).
"She is a really sensible filly and she is very brilliant."
Saturday's Silver Shadow Stakes (1100m) is the first time She Will Reign will race beyond 1000m and, if there is one query from a Golden Slipper perspective, apart from the fact she still needs to qualify for the race, it is her ability to run a strong 1200m.
However, Melham is convinced She Will Reign is not a one-dimensional leader and is upbeat that she is the horse to beat from a Golden Slipper perspective.
"Of course there is a reservation there (at 1200m) but we will get a better guide Saturday," he added.
"At this stage we still have to qualify and I am just going to ride the horse somewhere there on speed and if something wants to go mad and I get an opportunity to pop in behind them I might do that.
"But by the same token it's a good asset for a two-year-old to have to jump and run, so I'm not too fazed about taking that away from her. I'm certainly looking forward to Saturday and I don't think she will be letting us down."
She Will Reign is 17/2 to win the Golden Slipper.
