Winx remains unbeatable
Winx is chasing down some of Australia's greatest ever race horses after making it 14 straight wins in the Apollo Stakes at Randwick on Monday afternoon.
Over 6,000 people flocked into Randwick, many straight from work, to watch the super mare in action and she did not disappoint when beating main rival Hartnell by three-lengths, while Endless Drama took third.
Winx has now equalled the winning sequence of the legendary Phar Lap, and now has Carbine and Bernborough, who both managed 15 in a row, in her sights.
I try not to read too much or listen too much about the records but I knew she was out to equal Phar Lap today.Chris Waller
Winx has some way to go to catch Black Caviar, who reached 25 straight victories before retiring, but for now there is no stopping Winx.
Trainer Chris Waller admitted he was aware but tried not to focus on the Phar Lap record going into the Apollo Stakes.
"I try not to read too much or listen too much about the records but I knew she was out to equal Phar Lap today," Waller said. "I try to keep it in perspective, Phar Lap backed up week in, week out over all distances.
"But we are not sheltering Winx, either. We are running in all the best races but we do protect her in terms of how many runs she has each preparation.
"It is always good to get that first race over with and we can look ahead to the rest of her autumn campaign.
"We know the day will come when she is not quite there and she is beaten. There might be another champion that comes along and takes her mantle. We are prepared for that but we are enjoying it while it lasts."
There was a moment, albeit briefly, at the 600m when Winx was left flat-footed as the field began to sprint for home, but jockey Hugh Bowman was not concerned.
"I just encouraged her to pick up the tail of Tye Angland's horse (Endless Drama) which she did and within a blink of an eye, it was all over," Bowman said. "It is a privilege to ride Winx, she is great for our industry."
Winx is a 6/4 chance to win this year's Cox Plate. Hartnell meanwhile is 25/1 with Black Heart Bart rated at 50/1.
