Denis Betts says his Widnes Vikings players have got used to the idea of being written off, following their opening Super League win over Catalans Dragons.

The Vikings were tipped to struggle by many at the start of the season, but a comfortable 40-12 victory over the Dragons in round one surprised many.

They head into next Sunday's trip to face Castleford Tigers full of confidence and Betts is confident that his side can continue their strong start.

"The lads who missed out last year through injury are healthy and fit and the new lads have come in and given us a real boost. We're the only group that thinks we can do anything this year, but we've got a good group of players," said the Vikings boss, whose side scored 28 unanswered points in the second half to emerge emphatic winners.

"The performance, particularly in the second half, justifies the targets we've set ourselves and the goals we've got. In the first half we looked a little bit edgy, but we just had to be the side we practised to be."

Betts reserved praise for veteran forward Chris Houston, who he believes produced his best performance as a Widnes player.

"Chris Houston has had some good games for me, but I haven't seen him play that well," said the Widnes boss. "He's got the bit between his teeth, he was outstanding, and my selection for man of the match by some distance."

Super League returns on Thursday, with Huddersfield hosting Warrington and Leeds facing Hull KR at Elland Road.

The Rhinos are 151.00 to win the Grand Final again this season, with St Helens 1213.00 and Hull FC 41.00.
