Wane sees Tomkins positives
Wigan Warriors head coach Shaun Wane believes the omission of Sam Tomkins from England's World Cup squad is great news for the club.
Tomkins was previously a regular in the England squad, but he is not currently in Wayne Bennett's thinking.
I am confident that he will come back even better next year.Shaun Wane
And though Wane is eager to see his players experience success at international level, he admits that a longer break for Tomkins is positive for Wigan's prospects in 2018.
"Sam's not had a pre-season in years due to injury or England duty. We support international rugby league and we would never stand in a player's way, but it does make a big difference whether they have a pre-season or not," said Wane, whose Wigan side narrowly missed out on the top four this season.
"You only have to look at Sean O'Loughlin. He had his first full pre-season in years last winter, and we saw the benefits, he was fantastic, so while it would have been nice to see Sam back in the England side, I think he'll benefit from this."
Following an injury-hit return to England, after his spell in the NRL, Tomkins appears capable of returning to top form in the months ahead.
"I am confident that he will come back even better next year, alongside a lot of our players," said Wane. "I can tell that Sam is motivated, he's training already - which is fantastic if you're a Wigan fan."
England open their World Cup campaign with a tough fixture against champions Australia on Friday 27th October.
The Kangaroos are 2.00 to win the World Cup, with England 2.00 and New Zealand 5001.00.
