Exeter Chiefs forwards coach Rob Hunter says that the team have learnt their lessons well after bouncing back from successive defeats.

Following on from losses home and away to Leinster in the European Champions Cup, Chiefs got back to winning ways in the Aviva Premiership, beating Northampton Saints 35-14 at Franklin's Gardens.

I think it is really important that we continue to learn and don't sit back and think everything is rosy.

It was the first league match for Saints since they parted company with Jim Mallinder but it failed to bring about a change in fortunes as they were heavily beaten at home.

Will Chudley got the Chiefs in front and they put more points on the board after the break with Sam Simmonds, Thomas Waldrom and Jack Yeandle all scoring tries.

The win increased Exeter's lead at the top of the table and they have a nine-point lead over the chasing pack, though Saracens can cut the gap with victory away at Leicester Tigers.

The defeats in Europe have been costly as Exeter try to progress to the knockout stages of the Champions Cup but Hunter was pleased with the way the team responded to those setbacks.

He said after the match: "It is really pleasing to perform well on the back of two losses, and it is learning those lessons and transferring them back into the Premiership that matters.

"We have always been a good learning side and I think it is really important that we continue to learn and don't sit back and think everything is rosy.

"We choked them up front at scrum and line-out, especially. Again, the lads did their homework really well, with Sam Skinner running the forwards and with the impact players coming off the bench."

The Chiefs are back in action on New Year's Eve when they are at home to Leicester.

The Chiefs are 1213.00 to win the European Champions Cup with Leinster 1.30 and defending champions Saracens priced at 1213.00.

England are 4.33 to win the Six Nations early next year.
