Konta returns to winning ways
Johanna Konta has made the perfect start to 2018 by beating Madison Keys in the first round of the Brisbane International.
The British number one was pleased to return to winning ways after enduring a poor final four months to 2017.
Konta, who reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon in July before losing to Venus Williams, had lost five matches in a row in a run stretching back to the Cincinnati Open in August.
Konta, who had been sidelined since October because of foot injury, defeated the American 4-6 6-4 6-3.
"It was my first match in quite a while and it was a tough first round, Madison is a great player," Konta said. "She has a big game so when my chances came I had to take them."
Keys reached her first Grand Slam final in September 2017 when she was beaten by Sloane Stephens at the US Open.
On her way to reaching the final in New York, Keys defeated Elise Mertens, Tatjana Maria, Elena Vesnina, Elina Svitolina, Kaia Kanepi and CoCo Vandeweghe.
Meanwhile, Konta is 20/1 to win the Australian Open this month. Keys can be backed at 18/1, Stephens at 40/1 and Serena Williams at 1212/1.
