The Gaels of St. Mary's continue their drive for an undefeated Conference season this weekend when they welcome in the Gonzaga Bulldogs to the McKeon Pavilion in Moraga.
St. Mary's are currently 13-0 in the WCC and has won 19 in a row, a streak that includes a victory over Gonzaga at the McCarthey Athletic Center in Spokane earlier in the campaign.
Australian senior Jock Landale poured in 26 points for the Gaels and also grabbed 12 rebounds to register a double-double in the 74-71 triumph in the middle of January.
That, and three point victories over Pacific and San Diego are the closest St. Mary's have come to being upset in Conference play where the Gaels have averaged a victory margin of a shade under 16 points per contest.
St Mary's are currently 3001.00 to win the NCAAB Championship with Duke 3001.00.
Despite the gaudy 24-2 record St. Mary's latest ranking of 11th in the latest Associated Press Top 25 seems somewhat excessive.
The Gaels are a useful side, but their two defeats in non-conference action were to Washington State and Georgia, neither of who is going to the Big Dance unless they win their Conference tournament.
That's particularly telling in the latter's case where eight other SEC teams could get the nod.
Currently projected to be a fifth seed in the NCAA Tournament, it would not be a shock if the seeding committee dropped the Gaels a couple of spots down to a sixth or even seventh seed.
Certainly sweeping the Bulldogs, remaining undefeated in the WCC and winning the Conference tournament would help a lot in alleviating the feeling that this year St. Mary's is a little overrated.
