Villanova take over top spot
The Villanova Wildcats moved up three places in the latest Associated Press Top 25 Poll to replace the Duke Blue Devils as the top team in the land.
While Duke was being upset by Boston College Eagles to lose their first game of the campaign, and fall to fourth overall in the AP Poll, the Wildcats remained undefeated with victories over a useful Gonzaga side and La Salle.
Phil Booth had 18 points for Villanova in the win over the Explorers and is one of four players that average double figures for the Wildcats.
Villanova has just the one game this week when they face the Temple Owls at the Liacouras Center on Philadelphia on Tuesday.
The Owls have already lost to La Salle, a potential indicator of relative strengths, but victories over Auburn, Clemson, South Carolina and Wisconsin signal this is not a match up to overlook for Jay Wright and his Wildcats.
Tom Izzo and the Michigan State Spartans are second in the AP Poll with the early season neutral court defeat to Duke the only blemish on their record.
The Spartans have run off eight straight since including impressive back-to-back victories over North Carolina and Notre Dame at the end of November.
Michigan State will take on Oakland this weekend and has a fairly benign schedule through the end of the calendar year against Houston Baptist, Long Beach State, Cleveland State and Savannah State before getting into the meat of their Big Ten Conference schedule starting with the visit of Maryland.
