Fiesta Bowl hosts high profile clash
The Washington Huskies and the Penn State Nittany Lions meet on Saturday in the final battle between the Pac 12 and the Big Ten in the Bowl Season.
Both the Huskies and the Nittany Lions had national championship hopes coming into the season although both were realistic enough to know that next year may be better.
Indeed this Fiesta Bowl clash could well be repeated in either the Orange Bowl or Cotton Bowl next season as one of the semi-finals in the College Football Playoff.
However for now Washington and Penn State will focus on looking to end this campaign on a positive note.
The Huskies have won two in a row, defeating Utah and Washington State, but their earlier losses to Arizona State and Stanford, particularly the latter, erased any chance of making the Pac-12 Championship game.
For the Nittany Lions four points over two defeats separated them from playing for the Big Ten Championship and potentially a national title.
Just like the Huskies, it was a crucial in Division loss, in this case to Ohio State, which cost the team the opportunity to play Wisconsin and then be invited to the College Football Playoff.
The Buckeyes of Ohio State would instead represent the East Division against the Badgers, but defeats to Oklahoma and Iowa doomed their chance of an invite to the playoff.
Instead the Buckeyes were invited to the Cotton Bowl where they defeated USC 24-7 on Friday evening at the AT & T Stadium in Arlington.
Washington are 2.35 to overcome Penn State, with the Lions 1.64. The Huskies are 1.95 with a 2.5-point spread in their favour.
