Kiffin in the spotlight this week
Florida Atlantic head coach Lane Kiffin will get most of this attention this week as his Owls take on the Zips of Akron in the Cheribundi Tart Cherry Boca Raton Bowl.
It's a home game for FAU, literally in their own stadium, as the Owls look to cap what has been an excellent season in style.
Undefeated in Conference USA play during the regular campaign, Florida Atlantic dominated North Texas in the Conference title game on their way to a 41-17 victory.
For Kiffin, the season has been something of a redemption as a head coach, having failed while leading the Oakland Raiders, Tennessee Volunteers and the USC Trojans, only to show his offensive brilliance as the offensive coordinator for the Alabama Crimson Tide for a couple of seasons.
While Alabama slumped to 25th in yards this year, FAU was ninth ahead of such well-known programs as USC, Auburn, Clemson and Georgia.
That Kiffin can coach is undeniable having turned a 3-9 team around into a juggernaut in his first season in charge. Now he must show he has gained the needed maturity to run a program.
High-profile teams with openings did not come calling in the past month, but another year like this will likely see someone take a chance.
Perception is very much reality in this case and a Bowl win over the runners up in the MAC will be a good visual for any Athletic Director looking to justify a hiring this time next year.
As such all eyes will be on the FAU Football Stadium on Tuesday in the only game of the day.
Meanwhile, Alabama are 2.80 to win the NCAAF Championship, with Oklahoma 4.50 and Clemson 3.25.
