Southgate seeks pride in finale

England head coach Gareth Southgate wants to see his side show 'huge pride' in their World Cup 2018 third place play-off against Belgium on Saturday.

Southgate was speaking after seeing the Three Lions suffer a 2-1 defeat to Croatia in the semi-finals, leaving them with only pride to play for against the Red Devils, who defeated England 1-0 during the group phase.

And Southgate accepts that he has work to do to get his dejected squad back in the right mood to try and end the tournament in Russia on a high.

He told reporters: "It's not a game any team wants to play in. We have two days to prepare and we will want to give a performance of huge pride.

"Every time we wear the shirt we want to play well and win, (but) it's going to be a really difficult task."

England are 3.20 to defeat Belgium in 90 minutes on Saturday and are 12.00 to do so by a 2-1 scoreline, with the Three Lions 4.75 to triumph by a one-goal margin.

Meanwhile, Southgate believes his players have set down a new marker for future tournaments by making it all the way to the last four of world Cup 2018.

He added: "There will be a new benchmark and level of expectation. To become a winning team there are hurdles you have to overcome - we've surpassed many of them.

"(This) was a wonderful opportunity and you can't guarantee they'll come again, but equally we want to be a team who hit quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals.

"A lot of teams who go on to win trophies lose in quarter-finals or semi-finals first."
