Demons handed Pickett boost
Melbourne have been handed a much-needed boost ahead of their round one clash with Fremantle with the news Kysaiah Pickett is available.
The Demons have been dealt a couple of hard blows on the injury front in recent weeks with both Sam Weideman and star recruit Ben Brown on the treatment table.
To have two key players missing from their attack for the MCG showdown against the Dockers is a blow, but at least Pickett has been given the nod.
The teenager has been away from the club for three weeks following a family bereavement but he has kept himself in great shape and is fit enough for selection.
Pickett impressed during his debut season in 2020 when making 14 senior appearances and it is hoped he can kick on again in 2021.
Head coach Simon Goodwin is certainly very hopeful.
"He's done a lot of work," Goodwin said. "He's done more than what people think. He went away for three weeks, he was
doing F45 every morning in Adelaide and he was training with a SANFL club. He's just been outstanding in the way he's gone about his preparation.
"He's come back and played one-and-a-half VFL practice games and he's played really strongly, so he puts himself up for selection."
There is also more good news as Angus Brayshaw (foot), Clayton Oliver (soreness) and Christian Salem (hamstring tightness) should all return.
"We get a bit more experience and a few more of the guys who have been around the traps back into the team and that's a good position for our club to be in," Goodwin added.
"Angus has done the work now … and we saw what Clayton could do against Richmond. He's a pretty dynamic player for us, so he's certainly going to help our midfield."
Melbourne are priced at 4/1 to win the AFL grand final.
The Demons are priced at 21/50 to beat Fremantle.
