May out for a month
Melbourne have confirmed star defender Steven May is looking at up to a month on the sidelines after suffering a nasty facial injury against Geelong at the weekend.
The Demons continue to go from strength-to-strength after picking up a 25-point win over the Cats at the MCG on Sunday, but the victory came at a cost.
May had to leave the field and was taken straight to hospital after being on the receiving end of an accidental elbow from Geelong forward Tom Hawkins.
Scans have confirmed that May has suffered a fractured right eye socket and his second concussion of the season so far.
The Demons have now confirmed May will be out for at least a month, which is a big blow as they look to build on their impressive start to the 2021 AFL campaign.
"Fingers crossed he’s going to be ok," teammate Adam Tomlinson said on SEN. "It wasn’t pretty on the sideline. His eye blew up pretty much by the time he got to the dugout.(His eye) was already closed over."
Tomlinson then confirmed he had spoken to his star teammate after he returned home and is keeping his fingers crossed for a speedy recovery.
"He said he was in good spirits and he was going to be ok, but it wasn’t great when it first happened," he added. "He’s at home and resting.
"Fingers crossed he’s going to be out for the shortest time. He’s such a vital player to us. What he does week in, week out is phenomenal.
"The way he has developed at the Dees alone has been amazing."
Melbourne are priced at 4/1 to win the AFL grand final.
