Masters and more for Clayton
Jonny Clayton enjoyed double delight as he claimed The Masters title and in doing so earned a place in the Premier League of Darts.
The Welshman knocked out Michael van Gerwen on Saturday to secure a place on finals day and he showed his mettle again, as he followed up a last-leg win over the Dutchman by repeating the feat against both James Wade and Peter Wright.
I'm over the moon to be in it. I really am chuffed to bits.Jonny Clayton
That set up a final showdown with Mervyn King, who himself came through a semi-final thriller to down world champion Gerwyn Price 11-10.
It was Clayton who eventually claimed the title, beating King 11-8 to secure his first-ever major singles crown and, having done so, he was then rewarded with a spot in the Premier League this season.
He told the official PDC website: "I was hoping for a place in the Premier League, but to hear it confirmed on stage after I won was amazing.
"I'm over the moon to be in it. I really am chuffed to bits. (Also) to get over that winning line in my first individual final is an amazing feeling."
Clayton completes a Premier League line-up which also includes Price, Van Gerwen, Wright, Rob Cross, Nathan Aspinall, Gary Anderson, Dimitri Van den Bergh, Glen Durrant and Jose de Sousa.
Durrant is the defending champion, while Van Gerwen and Anderson are the only other players to have previously won the tournament.
