Frank - Brentford deserve semi spot
Brentford manager Thomas Frank says his Bees side "truly deserve" their place in the last four of the EFL Cup after overcoming Newcastle on Tuesday night.
Jay Dasilva scored the only goal of the game at the Brentford Community Stadium as Brentford qualified for the last four of a major competition for the first time in their 131-year history.
Brentford had already beaten three Premier League opponents - Southampton, West Brom and Fulham - in this year's competition and came into the quarter-final against Newcastle on the back of a 13-match unbeaten sequence.
And despite Frank making numerous changes to his starting line-up, the confidence gained from that run exuded from the Championship outfit.
The hosts were on top for the majority of the first period and saw Saman Ghoddos hit the bar and Sergi Canos squander an excellent opportunity before Dasilva finally made the Magpies pay as he fired a controlled left-volley past Karl Darlow in the Newcastle goal.
The Premier League visitors offered little in response with Callum Wilson and a Ryan Fraser attempt saved by Luke Daniels their only chances of real note.
Frank, who is aiming to lead Brentford into the top flight this season after defeat in last season's Championship play-off final, was understandably delighted with his side's performance.
"The players deserve a lot of praise because it was an unbelievable performance against a Premier League side and we truly deserved the win," he said.
"In a cup tournament it's all about the win and getting over the line but for me you want to achieve that top performance every time and we top performed out there which makes it even more satisfying.
"It's a big step for the club and shows how far we have progressed."
Brentford are 16/1 to win the EFL Cup with semi-final ties to be played the week commencing 4th January.
The Bees are 2/5 to be promoted to the Premier League this season.
