Nathan Ake put the hosts 1-0 up after the 16th minute before a Nordi Mukiele own goal and Riyad Mahrez penalty came either side of Leipzig’s first through Christopher Nkunku.
Nkunku would go on to score twice more, but goals from Jack Grealish, Joao Cancelo and Gabriel Jesus put the Citizens out of sight.
Saints up next
Paris Saint Germain and Club Brugge, the other two sides in the group, shared the points in Belgium as they played out a 1-1 draw.
Man City travel to Paris on the 28th September for their next Champions League game, but before that Guardiola's men take on Southampton at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.
The Spaniard gave his assessment of his side's dominant win and their preparations for the weekend's game.
Guardiola full of praise
He said: "Of course, I am delighted and happy and thank you to these incredible players we have. It was a really tough game. The first game at home it was important to win and we scored six goals.
"There were nine goals in the game, so it would have been nice for all the people watching.
"I think the game was tight - we were fortunate that when they scored we were able to score immediately.
"Seventeen goals in the last four games is nice to give to the fans. Now we will rest and prepare for Southampton."
