Carver relieved to stop the rot
Newcastle United manager John Carver says he was pleased that a tough week had ended with his side halting a run of eight successive losses.
That run took United down the table and very close to the relegation zone. They remain in trouble but Carver focussed on the positives after a 1-1 draw at home to West Brom.
He said: "That could be huge, it was important to stop the slide and that run of defeats.

"One thing I would say is when you see a performance like that - and hopefully it's not too late - is that the players do care and they do want to stay in the Premier League.
"It was like being back at a football stadium where the only thing that mattered was football."
At an edgy St James’ Park it looked as if yet another defeat was on the cards when Victor Anichebe headed the visitors into the lead after half an hour.
However, the home side got back onto level terms just before half-time through Ayoze Perez.
That did not lead to a second half revival and it was West Brom who went close with Craig Gardner, Chris Brunt and Saido Berahino all having chance to retake the lead for the Baggies.
United though held on for the point which stopped the run of defeats but ensures the side remain in deep relegation trouble at the bottom of the Premier League table.
They sit 17th in the table, two points clear of Hull in the third relegation place and with an inferior goal difference.
They have two games left, QPR away next weekend followed by a home game against West Ham United.
Chelsea, Premier League winners this season, are 19.00 to win in 2015-16. Manchester clubs City and United are priced at 2.00 and 2.00 respectively.
