Copy That can go the distance says Green
Trainer Ray Green says the distance will not be an issue for Copy That when his charge tackles the $95,000 Messenger at Alexandra Park on Friday night.
Copy That is the one to beat heading into the four-year-old Group 1 but there have been suggestions the 2700m trip could be the undoing of him.
Copy That has raced further than 2400m on six occasions in his career and has just the one win.
Even so Green says that should not scare punters off and has told any doubters to go back and watch last year's Auckland Cup when Copy That came third in a thriller over 3200m.
"That allayed any fears for me and should for anybody else," Green said ahead of this latest assignment.
"He was great that night and he was also luckless in the Northern Derby last year over 2700m, so I am not worried about that at all. He has come through last week well and I think he will lead and be very hard to catch."
Copy That finished behind Amazing Dream and Spankem in the Auckland Cup and the former is again seen as the biggest danger on Friday night.
Amazing Dream has won both the Northern Derby and Auckland Cup but it is thought a lot would have to go her way tonight to add the Messenger to the trophy cabinet.
Elsewhere at Alexandra Park reinsman John Dunn says he has every faith Sundees Son can overcome a tricky barrier after landing gate one in the $150,000 What The Hill Rowe Cup.
"I am not worried about the barrier," says Dunn. "He is never super fast away but I am confident he will step away with them and be handy enough."
