Copy That joins elite ranks
Copy That moved himself into elite company after he took out the $95,000 Dawson Harford Messenger Championship at Alexandra Park on Friday night.
There had been question marks over whether Copy That would be able to go the distance in the Group 1 feature, but he showed it was no issue and he is a stayer when leading throughout to win.
The victory comes just a week after he won the Taylor Mile and he joins a list of legends of the sport who have won both feature races.
The list includes Spankem, Lazarus, Field Marshal and Christen Me and reinsman Maurice McKendry says his charge has now proven without doubt that he can compete with the very best.
"He is a very good horse, he has a good horse’s speed," says McKendry. "But he was very strong in the Auckland Cup sitting parked too so I think he could be a Cups winner.
"So he has it all in front of him."
Copy That came out on top ahead of Bad To The Bone, who took second, while Amazing Dream came in third.
Meanwhile, earlier in the evening True Fantasy put in a fine performance to win the $120,000 Magness Benrow Sires’ Stakes Championship.
True Fantasy came from the back of the field to take the win, much to the delight of driver Natalie Rasmussen.
"She is a real Bettors Delight, every time she goes to the races she gets better," Rasmussen said after the win.
"Not many can do what she did here the last two weeks and she is just so laid back and takes it all in. But she is a very good filly."
