Timmy Murphy is about to have shoulder surgery which will force him to miss next month's Cheltenham Festival.

The 39-year-old, who won the Grand National on Comply or Die six years ago, suffered a dislocated shoulder for a second time in three months in January.

Murphy must now undergo corrective surgery on the troublesome injury, with his agent, Chris Broad, saying: "The only light at the end of the tunnel is that he is going to have an operation on the shoulder. I spoke to him on Monday and the shoulder is fine, but he needs to address the problem once and for all.

"That's going to rule him out of Cheltenham, unfortunately, but he needs to get it right."

Murphy first dislocated the joint at Newbury in November in an incident involving fellow jockey Dominic Elsworth, which led to him being banned for nine days by the British Horseracing Authority.

AP McCoy is 67.00 to be the top jockey at the Cheltenham Festival while Ruby Walsh can be backed at 1.53, Noel Fehily at 34.00 and Bryan Cooper at 26.00.
