Aidan O'Brien won his seventh Qipco 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket, but with Mother Earth and not the big talking filly Santa Barbara.

Ridden by Frankie Dettori, who was winning the race for the fourth time after his previous successes with Cape Verdi (1998), Kazzia (2002) and Blue Bunting (2011), Mother Earth made use of her experience to swoop late and win going away at the line. She returned a 10-1 winner.

The 50-year-old winning rider said: "We can still do it. It's my twentieth Classic so I am delighted to win it in my hometown of Newmarket.

"Aidan gave me a lot of confidence. He told me to ride her calmly and that she would come home good. I followed Ryan and I kicked at the top of the hill because I knew she'd get home. And she did."

Dettori added: "I was a bit deflated yesterday with Battleground but when you ride in the Classics for Coolmore on the second or third string you have a live chance and in the back of mind I thought anything is possible."

Santa Barbara, who was easy to back before the off and was sent off a 5-2 joint-favourite alongside Alcohol Free, could only manage fourth.

Mother Earth became O'Brien's fifth winner of the race in the past six years and his third on the trot following on from the victories achieved by Hermosa (2019) and Love last year.

She was chased home by Saffron Beach in second while Fev Rover finished third.

Mother Earth is available at 999/1 for further Classic success in the Oaks.
