Gators snap up Gilbert

Florida appear to have found their successor to NFL-bound tight end Kyle Pitts after former Louisiana State University star Arik Gilbert announced on Sunday he will be transferring to the Gators.

The five-star recruit played in eight games for the Tigers as a freshman in 2020, securing 35 receptions for 368 yards and two touchdowns.

But he opted out of the Tigers' final couple of games and instead chose to enter the transfer portal in January.

That sparked widespread rumours about the possible next destination for the 18-year-old Georgia native with the likes of Tennessee, Clemson and his home-state Bulldogs all seen as contenders.

At the time of his opt-out, LSU head coach Ed Orgeron said he would welcome Gilbert back if he decided to return to Baton Rouge in 2021.

But Gilbert has revealed he will head to Gainesville in a bid to fill the shoes of Pitts, who caught 43 receptions for 770 yards and 12 touchdowns last year.

"After careful consideration, I have decided to commit to the University of Florida," the 6ft 5inch prospect said via Twitter. "This is the best situation for me, and I'm excited to join the family."

Florida, who lost offensive coordinator Brian Johnson to the Philadelphia Eagles last week, are 28/1 to win the NCAAF title next year in Futures betting.

Defending champions Alabama are 3/1 to claim glory, with Clemson available at 7/2 while LSU are on offer at 28/1.
