NFL - US Sports: Wilson reveals role models

Garrett Wilson has modelled his game on some of his would-be peers

New York Jets' rookie receiver Garrett Wilson says he has modelled his game on former Buffalo Bills wideout Stevie Johnson and two of the NFL's most-feared current stars - Davante Adams and Cooper Kupp.

Wilson, 9/1 to win Offensive Rookie of the Year, last week joined fellow first-round selections Ahmad 'Sauce' Gardner and Jermaine Johnson II in signing his first-ever contract in the pros at One Jets Drive.

Ready for the big time

The former Ohio State star produced 70 receptions for 1,058 yards and 12 touchdowns in his junior year before declaring for the draft and posting a rapid 4.38-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine in March.

But he will need to keep proving himself week in, week out in the NFL and the fight to gain respect in a league that has so many talented wide receivers has already begun for Wilson.

He says he has patterned his play after a trio of NFL wideouts, none of whom were first-round selections - but all of whom became reliable targets for their quarterbacks.

"I've always kind of modeled my game after Stevie Johnson," Wilson told

"He played with the Bills back in the day and he kind of had a basketball background. He was elusive and I like the way he played the game.

"There's so many good receivers in the league, you try to take something from all their games. Cooper Kupp, Davante Adams, they've all got different things that they bring to the table.

"You're playing against good players and you have to go out there with a plan. You just can't expect to run around someone.

"You have to get on their shoulders and make then uncomfortable. There's a lot of nuances to running routes and I'm excited to keep learning."
